The art of natural hair care is a complex union of science (tangible) and imagination (intangible). Consequently, the process of selecting treatments and styles is nearly impossible without an in-person introduction. Factors such as texture, density, length, and the like, cannot be determined otherwise. Also, as receiving a hair service is a personal experience, a consultation provides an opportunity for client and stylist to connect and establish congruency.

Of course not. We welcome clients on all spectrums of the “returning natural” process. Transition styles are a great way to take the first step.
Chemical treatments such as relaxers do not wear off, per se. Healthy hair grows approximately half an inch per month, thereby producing new growth. However, the chemically treated hair must be cut, as it does not eventually revert to its natural state. Alternately, a client’s hair may break during the transition process, prior to his/her decision to cut. This is what we consider healthy breakage, as the separation is on the line of demarcation, where chemically treated hair meets new growth.
No, they are not. We employ various locking techniques across a broad range of textures to start the locking process. So no worries; there is an option for everyone and every texture.
Yes; however, depending on the length of clients’ starter locs, we may recommend that shampooing be reserved for maintenance services every 3-4 weeks to prevent the newly formed locs from unraveling.
Due to its dense, solidifying nature (when pure) and petrolatum base (when processed), beeswax is not ideal for locking hair. Over time, it causes heavy build-up that is nearly impossible to totally extract from mature locs.

Wicks are a unique, bold style of jumbo locs, usually with a total loc count of fifteen or less. Traditional Locs are the most common style of locs – small, medium, and large in size – usually with a total loc count of 125 or less. Its parting style is typically brick layered. Microlocs, as the name suggests, are micro in size (smaller than the smallest Traditional Loc yet slightly larger than Sisterlocks), usually with a total loc count between 150 and 350. Though they are usually installed with a grid, it is not mandatory. Sisterlocks, a trademarked technique that must be installed by a Licensed Sisterlock Consultant, are the smallest of all loc categories and commonly have a total loc count of 350+. Its grid is very specific and mandated. Of the four types, Traditional Locs is the one that is primarily maintained with the use of holding agent products, whereas the other three loc types are maintained utilizing either the interlocking or crochet technique.

Unfortunately not. To start, we recommend that clients have four inches in length to start Microlocs. Hair density, texture, length and a client’s budget are key factors in determining Microloc candidacy. For instance, while it is recommended that clients with low density hair get our two largest Microloc sizes (3/8in & 1/2in), clients with high density hair may opt for any size Microlocs (1/4in, 5/16in, 3/8in, or 1/2in). Similarly, though clients with a loose curl pattern may get Microlocs, the loc journey looks quite different than clients with a tightly coiled curl pattern. Additionally, because Microloc installations and maintenance are a specialty loc service, priced by the hour, its investment is more than that of Traditional Locs. All of these details and nuances are explained in an in-person consultation.

Interlocking is a loc maintenance technique by which, following a specific pattern, the loc is interwoven within itself, akin to crocheting, thereby tightening the new growth to the scalp.
Whereas Interlocking does not necessarily thin locs, the inherent tension created by the process results in a more condensed loc. The density of locs that are palm rolled versus those that are interlocked may be compared to that of twists versus braids.
Unfortunately not. The converse is a common misconception. Consistent, excessive heat renders, over time, the same results as chemical treatments. Protein bonds in the hair shaft are gradually broken as continuous heat is applied, thereby stretching the natural texture more and more, resulting in permanently straightened tresses. Once this takes effect, clients must begin the transition back to natural again in those damaged areas. But hey, natural hair comes with so many versatile styling options without straightening it, so why risk it?
Yes. The trade off is wet twists give more volume, whereas dry twists offer more length.
Clients may enjoy extensions for 2-3 months, with monthly maintenance services in between.

They should not, and do not, at The Way of Life. The magic is in the tension of the stylist’s hands.

With the exception of Loc Extensions and Microloc Extensions, the cost of hair is not included in the cost of extension services. Because clients only pay for the amount of hair used, the cost of hair isn’t included in the cost of service. In an effort to help clients financially prepare, we can offer an estimated cost of hair during the consultation.

We keep all extension hair stocked at the salon.

Organic hair color is a gentle composition of organic ingredients that are free of ammonia, parabens, and sulfates, and is 98% derived from plant sources. This translates to a much healthier, less invasive, color treatment. Conversely, conventional hair color relies on harsh chemicals, including but not limited to ammonia and PPD, to penetrate the cuticle, thereby resulting in a more invasive, damaging coloring process. Organic hair color is a safer application and exposure process for both the client as well as the stylist.
